General Production Process

Portal 2:

A) genre
Portal is a first person shooter puzzle game. The first person in this case comes from the game being in this mode of viewing. The shooter aspect comes from the use of the portal gun which in a sense ‘shoots’ portals in much the same way as a shoot them up like Call of duty uses to aim guns. The Puzzle aspect come from the way the game is set up, you are in a test chamber with a portal gun and you must use the tools at your disposal to get to the next chamber or level of the game. This happens because the game is linear.

B) narrative/storyline
The storyline in portal 2 starts with you waking up in the abandoned aperture science relaxation centre. This happens by a ‘core’ called wheatly, who proceeds to guide you through the game. You go through the puzzles until you accidently trigger ‘GlaDos’ a AI who controlled the facility before you (Chell the main character) destroyed her in the first game. Glados sees it is you and proceeds to chuck you down the trash. You are then in a new section of the game where a Wheatly guides you through the courses appearing throughout the sections to help as you disable the weapons and traps glados could use to hurt you later in the game. You succeed with replacing Glados with wheatly as the controller of the facility. However, he betrays you get put in an old testing course that was abandoned with the aim being to get back to Glados and shut her down once more. You make your way guided by the new narrator Cave Johnson assisted by Glados who was turned into a potato in the previous section, she agrees to help you as you rescue her from pigeons. As this section continues you begin to learn that Glados is in fact Carolyn, Cave Johnsons (the owner of aperture science before he died in the 90’s) assistant. You make your way back up to Wheatly who captures you and forces you to take part in the test chambers once again. You and Glados work together to come up with a plan to defeat him. You escape in the chapter named ‘The part where he kills you’ causing you to run with glados to go to his chamber and defeat him replacing him with glados again she lets you go and that’s the end of the game.
C) production process
Portal 2 was made with a iterative process. They started with the new idea called 'F-stop' and the creation of the basic play levels however after play tests they did not like the omission of portals in the game. Chambers were designed after this with the original portal mechanics with the drawing done in isometric on white boards before making them in the Hammer level editor to see if they would work in practice. They then changed and adjusted the levels based on extensive play tests, with chambers that were considered to easy, were changed or omitted from the game. Elements were changed throughout with the energy spheres being changed to become lasers to make the game easier to learn.

PreProduction:
For this they started creating ideas based on a new mechanic. This new mechanic is an idea called 'F-stop' and the creation of the basic play levels however after play tests they did not like the omission of portals in the game and reverted back to the old mechanics and adapting that to get the basic idea. They they set work on the story where they decided on this idea that shows the progression of aperture science as well as creating a new relationship between

Production
Once they had the basic assets they started on them main game deciding on the story and building the game and world around the idea they had gotten. They started by splitting the game into chapters with the game having four main areas. Glados, Abandoned Aperture, Wheatley and Defeating Wheatley. Each segment needed different assets with the first being a abandoned area where you go and get to Glados. They worked on these parts bit by bit deciding where and when areas needed work.

Post production:
As part of this they release various videos online talking about the game and funny shorts showing off features. They also released a lot of products themed around the game with t-shirts and models being examples. They they progressed onto creating a way for people to buy and customize their multiplayer characters as well as releasing a map editor for the game so players could create them.

The last Of Us tells the story of two people who have been caught in the apocalypse. The main goal in the game is to get Ellie to the fireflies and survive whilst doing so. There are various obstacles along the way that they have to battle both real and emotional.
[Spoilers Ending]
The ending of the game is once Ellie is taken to the fireflies and Joel is told the news that is is likely that she will die in the process of getting the immunity out from her. He gets defensive and kills anyone who stands in his way of getting to Ellie and saving her.
(JOELS BACKSTORY)One person in Joel. He starts as what we guess is a only father who works in the construction industry. You start playing as his daughter, Sarah. She wakes up hearing the phone something in the night after waiting for her father to get home so she can give him her present on his birthday. When you take the phone call Joel's brother is on the phone telling you to give the phone to Joel. The phone however goes dead with a distinctive three tone beep. You walk over to his room with him not being there. There are hints of a unknown virus around the house starting with a newspaper in the bathroom. You enter his room where the TV is on. You see the news on and then a explosion that happens on the TV then you hear and see it in the window. At this point you go downstairs. Where his phone is ringing with 20 missed calls from Tommy. You enter another room where Joel comes into the house with a infected neighbour he shoots him and Tommy arrives they try to get out of the city crashing in the process as they escape they reach a military guard that is given orders to shoot them as they try to escape, as a result Sarah gets shot and dies in his hands.
(Ellie's Backstory)
Not much is known about Ellie's backstory by it is told in the DLC Left behind. I haven't played this so can only say from the perspective of the main game. She learns she is immune from the virus when she is a mall(After the infection and she is not allowed there based on the rules) with her friend, and she is bitten by a infected and becomes immune. She finds Marlene who promises to help her and she turns her over to Joel.
C) Production process
The game was created in a iterative process. The story was always based on Joel and Ellie and the story was developed around this focus.
Pre Production
During the pre production phase they created the character and story that they would need for the game including assets for Joel, Ellie and other characters. They also wrote the script and started to get actors for the game.
Production:

During the production phase they mainly worked on the game with each element of the game being worked on separately. The actors and director worked on creating the scenes needed for the game in the Motion Tracking room. While other people were working on the assets and world that would be explored by the player. They also got a UX designer to work on the interface and controls making the controls a lot better than it was. They also made small changes here and there to the script as Ellie took more a a role in the game where she was more active in defending Joel. They also made changes to her character as the game goes on with her becoming more confident around Joel making the world more immersive.

Post Production:
After the game had released they had adverts online and release various merch and items that could be bought. They also started work on a DLC for the game called 'Left Behind' which depicted Ellie's backstory .
D) Characters
Ellie:
Ellie is a 14 year old girl who is the only person known to survive a infected's bite and the spores resulting from the fungus/virus. She only remembers life after the infection as a result had to grow up quick. With Joel slowly trusting Ellie more and more throughout the game. She had a sense of humour that few people have left, and in a powerful figure who does not stand by while Joel is being attacked, she even knifes people who try with her not wanting to stand by whilst Joel does everything but she works and hits people throughout the game even being independent whilst she has to look after Joel when he is ill.
She only remembers a time after the infection.

Tess:

Image result for the last of us tommyTess is a character we only see at the start of the game due to her getting infected. She is Joel's partner in crime and she and Joel get along well and work together to smuggle stuff in the city quarantine zone. When they are trying to escape from the bandits she gets bitten by a infected. She convinces Joel to take Ellie as far as she needs to go, to get a cure. She is Joel's driving force for getting Ellie to the fireflies faction.

Tommy:

Tommy is Joel's brother who helps him escape the city in the first day of the infection. He then joins the fireflies for a couple of years. He bumps into Tommy once again when looking for help from a group of survivors. He had left the fireflies to create a community of survivors and he helps Joel and Ellie get to where they are going.

E) Gameplay
Being a action game most of the story takes place during cut scenes with some of it portrayed through game-play. An example of this is Ellie changing her stance as you go through the game from being nervous to becoming more confident with Joel over time.
The action part of this game is played using a Duel-shock. It is mainly played via stealth or guns blaring depending on the player type.
There are crafting elements as well as there being very few items around to create these as most of the buildings had been looted a long time ago with a focus on using the few resources you have to get and pass obstacles and challenges
There are also puzzles in particular room that normally have a story element associated with them when Ellie and Joel talk about life before and stuff like that.
F )Target Audience
The target audience for the Last of us was both male and females who are aged 18 to 25. There are powerful women characters that show the strength in the story and environment they are in which appeal mainly to the female audience(also males to a lesser extent) with a strong action and combat which could appeal to the stereotypical male action/fps audience along with the gore in the game.
G) Platforms
The last of us was originally released on the PlayStation 3 and is played using the Duel-shock 3, There was a remastering for the PlayStation 4 released just a year later, It was a remaster because the developers changed and adjusted various parts of the game's textures and engines to take advantage of the significant power increase in the PlayStation 4.

Key Contributions Concept
Both Tommy and Edmund were important and were responsible for the concept of the game. Tommy participated with designing a control scheme for the game, this was important in the long run for making the game fluid to use and was instrumental in the concept phase. Edmund on the other hand was responsible for the design and creation of the concept art and story of the game. This, however was a larger contribution to the concept phase than Tommy, however without either of them in this phase of production, the game would have not been as complete as it was. Pre-ProductionThe pre-production is where both Tommy and Edmund were able to contribute equally, with them both contributing to the level design which would be instrumental in the games success with  it being key to the difficulty curve of the game. Edmund started to create the assets that would be used and Tommy started to create the engine that the game would use. The engine was important as it was able to make the game adapt to their need, instead of making the game adapt around the engines limits. During the production phase this is where Tommy was most important in this phase as this is where he began the production of the game programming and bug fixing, as well as making it run well, which would be important to the fluidity of the game as a whole. Edmund on the other hand was mainly play testing and improving the levels making sure the difficulty curve was not too hard. Tommy was more instrumental in this phase of production but it would not have been possible without the tweaking and designing of the levels by Edmund.Post-Production during post production Tommy started to make changes and improvements to the game whereas Edmund started to act as a sort of ambassador for the game appearing and doing interviews and creating comics to be included with the physical bundle, Tommy on the other hand was still changing and adding to the game, like adding a level editor which improved the game's shelf life so people were able to buy the game in stores for much longer and people were able to make their own content give the game more play time.
